1999 Japanese Season

The biggest story of the 1999 season was the the pair of rookie pitchers: Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Lions and Koji Uehara of Giants.  These two young hurlers were proclaimed superstars before they had even pitched an inning in the Japanese big leagues and neither disappointed.

In the Central League Uehara dominated the opposition going 20-4 with a 2.38 ERA.  He led the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts and won the Sawamura Award.  The Giants, however, were not able to ride their young phenom to the pennant.  Instead, the Dragons well-balanced pitching staff was responsable for giving Chunichi the title by a comfortable six games.

In the Pacific League, Sadaharu Oh's Fukuoka Daiei Hawks beat out the Seibu Lions in a close race.  The Hawks were led by newly aquired free agent Kimiyasu Kudo who led the league in ERA and was named the MVP.  Ichiro won his sixth consectutive batting title and Tuffy Rhodes of the Buffaloes won the homerun and RBI titles.

The  Hawks won the Japan Series four games to one.  Koji Akiyama hit homers in both of the first two games and was selected the series MVP.
