For the third time in the 1990s, the Swallows and Lions met in
the Japan Series. The Swallows, led by superstar catcher Atsuya Furuta
and Dwayne Hosey and helped by future Major Leaguer Masato Yoshii comfortably
won the Central League by eleven games. In the Pacific League, Ichiro
Suzuki once again dominated the offensive categories, leading the league
in batting, hits, and runs and finishing in the top ten in RBI, doubles,
stolen bases, and homeruns. Despite Ichiro's efforts, the Seibu Lions,
led by speedster Kazuo Matsui and MVP pitcher Fumiya Nishiguchi, won the
pennant by five games. In the Japan Series, the individual games
were hard fought but the Swallows emerged the victor after only five games.
