1992 Japanese Season

The race in the Central League in 1992 was probably the closest ever, as the last place Dragons finished only nine games out of first.  The Swallows won their first pennant in 14 years and only their second in history.  Led by Atsuya Furuta, Jack Howell and Takahiro Ikeyama, the Swallows would go on to win three of the next five championships.  Close behind the Swallows were the Giants, Tigers and Carp.  The Central League MVP Award went to Jack Howell who won both the batting and HR crowns.

In the Pacific League, the mighty Lions won their ninth pennant in eleven years (they would win it again in 1993 and 1994).  The Lions relied on the power of Koji Akiyama (31 HR), Kazuhiro Kiyohara (36 HR), and HR champ Oretes Destrade (41 HR) and the pitching of Sawamura Award winner Takehiro Ishii (15-3 1.94 ERA) and Taigen Kaku (14-4, 2.41 ERA).  The second place Buffaloes were led by Hideo Nomo, Hiroo Ishii and Ralph Bryant.

The 1992 Japan Series was a classic. Four of the seven games went into extra innings.  The Swallows led off with a 7-3 victory in twelve innings, but lost the next three by scores of 2-0, 6-1, and 1-0.  They bounced back winning both games 5 and 6 in 10 innings.  The seventh game also went 10 innings and ended with a 2-1 Lions victory.  Lions pitcher Takehiro Ishii  was named the series MVP.

The 1992 Japanese League season for APBA was created by  Bill Stevens.
