1967 Central League Season
During 1967, the V-9 Giants were at their height.
The Giants, featuring Hall of Famers Sadaharu
Oh, Shigeo
Nagashima, and Masaichi
Kaneda, cruised to their third of nine straight Central League titles
by twelve games. They led the league in team batting average,
homeruns, ERA, and fielding. Sadaharu Oh won his third straight MVP
award for leading the league in homeruns, RBI, and finishing third in batting.
The batting title was won by Toshio Naka of the second-place Dragons while
teammate Kentaro Ogawa's 29 wins insured him the Sawamura Award.
Other superstars in the league include Shinichi
Eto of the Dragons; Dave Roberts and Lou Jackson of the Atoms; Taira
Fujita, Gene Bacque, Yutaka
Enatsu and Minoru Murayama of the Tigers; and Dick Stuart of the Whales.
Although this season will not offer replayers a close
pennant race, it will help people appreciate the strength of the 1967 Giants
as well as "see" other Japanese greats in action.
Because of the different strategies used by Japanese managers, it is difficult to reproduce the actual league statistics during the replays, however, the best results were attained when using micromanagers Hack Gilbert II and Mike Bright.
