1967 Japan Series

Yomiuri Giants vs Hankyu Braves

This classic series pitted the great V-9 Giants against the Hankyu Braves.  The Giants, featuring Hall of Famers Sadaharu Oh, Shigeo Nagashima, and Masaichi Kaneda, cruised to their third of none straight Central League titles.   They led the league in team batting average, homeruns, ERA, and fielding.  Sadaharu Oh won his third straight MVP award for leading the league in homeruns, RBI, and finishing third in batting.  The Braves, with pitching greats Mitshiro Adachi, Takao Kajimoto, and Tetsuya Yoneda as well as Americans Daryl Spencer and Gordon Windhorn, won the Pacific League by a comfortable nine games.

The Giants stunned the Braves by winning the first three games, highlighted by a great 1-0 pitching duel between Tsuneo Horiuchi and Adachi in Game 2.  The Braves came back to win the next two at the Giants' home Korakuen Stadium.  Games 6, back at the Braves Nishinomiya Stadium, was a slugfest.  But the Giants' 15 hits and 3 homeruns were too much for the Braves.  The 9-3 final gave the Giants their third straight Japan Series title.  Masahiko Mori, the Giants' catcher, was awarded the series MVP, Kunio Jonouchi, winner of 2 games for the Giants, was named Outstanding Pitcher, while the Outstanding Player award went to Daryl Spencer.
