1n 1934, Major League
Baseball put together one of the greatest teams of all-time to tour
Asia. Led by Connie Mack, the team included Babe Ruth, Lou
Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Earl Averill, Charlie Gehringer, Lefty Gomez,
Lefty O'Doul and Moe Berg. They embarked from Vancouver on
October 28, 1934 for a six week tour of the Far East. The team
played games in Hawaii, Japan, China, and the Philippines. The
tour was a huge success as thousands of Asian fans came out to watch
the American stars. This success led the Japanese to create a
professional baseball league two years later. Because of its importance to the development of baseball in Asia, the SABR Asian Baseball Committee has decided to conduct a thorough study of the 1934 tour. This web site is designed to disseminate the results of the committee's research to the public. At the end of our project, we hope to produce a book on the 1934 tour. If you are interested in
joining the project, please contact Robert Fitts at asianbaseball@mindspring.com. |
